Focus of the book: As the title claims, full photographic coverage of the 917 including predecessor and successor models.
This was the third book I bought about the Porsche 917. One could argue that I should have been satisfied with the book “917 – the Heroes, the Victories, the Myth” already.
On one hand this is certainly true but after I have mostly read the latter one I was missing the context into the whole Porsche Racing history. And this is exactly what this book is all about: it starts with many unreleased photos of the very beginning of Porsche’s racing history and highlights many facts of the 917′s predecessors namely the 904 (1963), 906 (1966), 910 (1966), 907 (1967) and the 908 (1968).
The main focus is of course on the years 1969 to 1972 but finishes somewhere in the 80s where the 917 K81 model lined up at Le Mans 1981 again!
The book is a very entertaining and interesting read and it is the first book that explained to me why Porsche found its way to the Porsche 917… Either you know me and you ask me for these reasons or you buy this book and enjoy the nearly 500 packed pages with thousands of photos… !
So having these three books in the book case, I would summarize:
- Porsche 917 – The Complete Photographic History : This book is the most detailed, providing also historical informations before and after the 917 era.
- “Porsche 917 – Eine Erfolgsgeschichte” : Liveries, liveries, liveries… this is also a very good guide to learn the different shapes of the 917 models (see link)
- “917 – the Heroes, the Victories, the Myth” : XL-sized book with excellent coverage of the 917 era only. Great photos and a good level of details. I see this book somewhere between the other two.
