The RS Spyder (known internally as Type 9R6) is an LMP2 class race car that marks the return of the Porsche factory to the upper echelons of sports car racing since the Porsche 911 GT1 finished the 1998 season. The RS Spyder is named after the legendary 550 Spyder of the 1950s (combined with Porsche's common RS designation "Renn Sport"). This car marks Porsche's return to the Le Mans-type of sports car racing since the firm abandoned its latest Le Mans prototype in 1999.

Penske Motorsports, Inc. fielded the new Porsche prototype in its first full season of competition exclusively in 2006. Prior to entering the entire 2006 ALMS season, it had its debut in 2005 at the final two races of the 2005 ALMS season as test events. These were the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, Georgia, on 1 October, and the season finale at Laguna Seca, California, on 16 October.
