| My Comment | This movie is very amusing to watch, it features of course lots of race sequences but also lots of snap shots from what happened besides the track (people drinking red wine, beer, eating french food, watching girls... all in clothes of the 60s of course).
This atmospheric film traces the fascinating story of the awesome race at Le Mans in 1966: The well established manufacturers Ford and Ferrari entered again with their 5 Liter racers GT40 and Ferrari 275 GTB. Porsche was trying since years to get the overall victory with 2 Liter engines by compensating the disadvantage in displacement compared to Ford and Ferrari by innovating in aerodynamics and weight reduction. For the first time, Porsche has shown their ability to belong to the top by finishing the 24 hours of Le Mans on places 4 to 7 with 4 Porsche 906.
The Porsche finishing the race as overall 4th (the fastest Porsche) was driven by the Swiss race driver Jo Siffert and Colin Davis from the UK.
Two years later at Le Mans 1968, the Swiss Team Squadra Tartaruga with the two Swiss drivers Rico Steinemann and Dieter Spoerry finished 2nd on the podium with a Porsche 907.
Although the movie is not of good quality really, it belongs to every DVD collection of a Le Mans fan!
Add-On: The DVD also features a very rare documentary about the development of the Ford GT40. |
